2PET 3:3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
2PET 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
2PET 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
2PET 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
The scoffers, as noted above are those who come along in the end (Gentile) generation, these were not present in great number from the time of the cross until this present day generation. In past or earlier generations mankind had a fear of God and were afraid to make comments against Christ or His appearing, this generation - on the contrary - delight in showing what they term "no fear" and no wonder as they also hate or deeply dislike their parents who in most part have shielded them from any Biblical studies and from death itself. Christ spoke of this generation in Matthew.
MATT 24:32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:
MATT 24:33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
MATT 24:34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
MATT 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
MATT 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
The fig tree is referred to as Israel and at a time when Israel shall start to bloom or grow then you know the time of the end of the Gentile age is near, having reserved the day and hour unto God HIMSELF does not mean we are not to know the time of Christ return, that is the season when it is near.
1THES 5:1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
1THES 5:2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
1THES 5:3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
1THES 5:4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
1THES 5:5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
1THES 5:6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
1THES 5:7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
1THES 5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
We are to know, in fact, we have a command to know the day of the LORD's return and it will be at a time when they decry Peace and safety not only for the world but most definite for Israel. Peace resides to the world as long as peace is known in Israel, this is the reason Christ stated to Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. It is also a time when great evil shall flow from nation to nation which is indicative of the internet as it is one of the greatest inventions created by man which allows evil to be ensued at the click of a mouse.
it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink.
JER 25:29 For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts.
JER 25:30 Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them, The LORD shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.
JER 25:31 A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the LORD hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh; he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the LORD.
JER 25:32 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth.
JER 25:33 And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto theother end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.
JER 25:34 Howl, ye shepherds, and cry; and wallow yourselves in the ashes, ye principal of the flock: for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are accomplished; and ye shall fall like a pleasant vessel.
JER 25:35 And the shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the principal of the flock to escape.
JER 25:36 A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and an howling of the principal of the flock, shall be heard: for the LORD hath spoiled their pasture.
JER 25:37 And the peaceable habitations are cut down because of the fierce anger of the LORD.
As Johnny Cash has recorded in his song, THE MAN COMES AROUND, the judgment of the LORD is found in the wind as stated in the book of Hosea.
HOSE 8:7 For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.
HOSE 8:8 Israel is swallowed up: now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein is no pleasure.
You may ask, "How have we sown to the wind?" in every way, in each test of the atomic bomb and now the neutron bomb which of course two were used in the bombing of Japan, and herein lies the plague the Bible speaks of for the use of such destroying winds.

ZECH 14:12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and theireyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
ZECH 14:13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.
ZECH 14:14 And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the heathen round about shall be gathered together, gold, and silver, and apparel, in great abundance.
This plague describes well the Nuclear Bomb.

AMOS 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?
AMOS 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
The LORD will cause the wind and the whirlwind in the earth as evil will punish evil and the LORD will send forth that spirit that all who delight in the evil by the evil will be destroyed because they did not love the way of truth but delighted in their own lust and sin.
AMOS 5:7 Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,
AMOS 5:8 Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:
2PET 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
2PET 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
2PET 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
2PET 3:11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
It is the elements that shall burn, which is the pollution, the sin, and those who relish in such but the earth itself shall continue after the judgment another 1,000 years after the Tribulation period which is to bring back into the LORD the nation of Israel.
